+JMJ+ Join me as I celebrate the 26th anniversary of my reception into the Catholic Church, my 13th year as a Catholic blogger, and my 3rd year owning this site, with a Flash Giveaway. +JMJ+ Welcome to the second post in our new Thursday series, The Story of Salvation. I’d like to begin with a prayer. I’ll pray the Come, Holy Spirit prayer. Pray with me if you like, use the same prayer or one of your choice. When you’re ready, meet me back here.

+JMJ+ Welcome to the introduction of a new Thursday series where we will explore the Story of Salvation. I’ve been wanting to write about the Bible and salvation history for some time now but have only mentioned it here and there in the past. When I was a kid (either in the 7th or 8th grade or maybe a freshman in high school) and a Methodist, I read the Bible straight through. I’d gotten one at church and, bookworm that I was (and am), I set myself the goal of reading it from cover to cover. And I did. I didn’t understand most of what I read, but I kept at it. Parts of it were beautiful and I’ve maintained my love of the Psalms to this day.

+JMJ+ Two things for tonight: first, a note about the virtual Catholic Bible conference that starts tomorrow. I registered already and then ran over here to tell you about it. Looks really interesting and I’m excited about it. Second, I’ve been working on a blog plan for the year and I’m looking forward to that, too.
There will be lots of free content at the Catholic Bible conference, I think, and a premium tier gets you continuing access to the content with downloadables and such. That’s what I need, something I can access way after the thing is over because I can hardly ever sit down and pay attention while these things are actually happening. More about the Take and Read: A Journey Into the Bible and a video below.
Continue reading “A new year and a renewed focus”A quick howdy, a word count update, and something for the Year of Faith
Just taking a break from NaNoWriMo to say a quick howdy, y’all. Howdy, ya’ll! :D
The writing is going well, I’m really loving it. Yes, it’s work, yes, the dogs are driving me crazy. Yes, I’ve had to deal with home maintenance and “improvement” and “handy” men. Yes, it makes me wanna say ARGH and GROAN and other things not quite so nice. Oy! But the writing is coming along and I really am enjoying it. And only partly because I’m doing NaNo on a 13″ MacBook Air with backlit keyboard but that certainly does help. ;)
Okay, diving back into the story now or I may dive into my bed instead. Oh, that is tempting. To sleep, perchance to dream, to dream some NaNoWriMo scenes, aye, that’s the stuff! ;)
Oh, my word count! Promised an update, didn’t I? Drum roll, please! Word count on the sixth day of noveling insanity is (envelope, please): 11,908 exceedingly excellent and oh-so-exquisite words! Woohoo! Yeah, that’s what I’m talkin’ about! Well, yes, it is what I’m talking about, of course it is. This is a word count update, after all. (Okay, perhaps I don’t need that third pot of coffee after all. Ahem. But I do have two pies in the kitchen. What am I thinking, I can’t eat pie this late at night! But…it’s pie! Is it ever really too late for pie?)
And lest you think that I’ve yammered on all this time and not said one thing about Catholicism on this supposedly Catholic blog, lemme lay this on ya: Jeff Cavins has been posting a series of short videos for the Year of Faith entitled, “The Rabbi-Disciple Relationship. There will be 5 parts, 3 are up so far as of tonight. View them on the Catholic Year of Faith website or sign up on that site to receive the videos in your email inbox. These are quite good. Highly recommended! Good night, y’all! Peace!
Walking Toward Eternity, Daring to Walk the Walk and Encountering Christ in the Bible
Jeff and Emily Cavins have a new Scripture study soon to be released through Ascension Press. You may be familiar with Jeff from the show he produced and hosted for several years on EWTN, Life on the Rock, and from his work with Dr. Scott Hahn on EWTN’s popular series Our Father’s Plan (listen to or download from EWTN, buy from Amazon or from EWTN Religious Catalogue) and the Great Adventure: A Journey Through the Bible.
This new series is intended to be less a study and more an introduction to lectio divina, praying with and meditation on Scripture, and conversation with God, an intimate and life-changing encounter with the living Christ. Hopefully a parish near here will offer this study soon. If not, I may have to get a set of the DVD’s for myself. (See video below or watch on YouTube. See website.)
Daring to Walk the Walk, the first study in the Walking Toward Eternity series, introduces you to seven key virtues and outlines practical steps for living them out in your life.
At the end of each session, you will come to the point of change as you ask the Lord three keys questions:
1. What are you asking of me Lord?
2. What specifically do you want me to do?
3. When?
Read or listen to more about lectio divina, praying the Scriptures:
- Excellent talks on lectio divina by Dr. Tim Gray on MP3 format.
- Lectio Divina: Stairway to Heaven by Dr. Tim Gray, PDF format.
Bible Timeline Study, the beginning of a Great Adventure

Updated January 14, 2021
One session into the 24-week Bible Timeline Study by Jeff Cavins (sessions are free at this host parish), part of the Great Adventure series, and I am thoroughly hooked. After class I drove to a favorite place for lunch, where they have wi-fi, and ordered the Study Kit. You can get it from Ascension Press. [CD’s and DVD’s can be purchased separately.]

I’m typing this while I’m at lunch, having just attended the first session of the Bible Timeline Study by Jeff Cavins, being held at a local parish here in Birmingham. I’ll tell you more about it after I get back from taking the dogs to the park with their pack buddies. I’ll be back later!
