Vote, Resources to Help You Form and Vote Your Catholic Conscience

The election grows nearer but I still hear some Catholics say that they have not yet decided who to vote for. So I put together a short page of resources to help you vote your Catholic conscience. Sadly, many have not yet formed their consciences, and many Catholics do not even know what that means. The Vote page will help you begin. First, start learning your faith (this is the Year of Faith, after all)! Then live it. Everywhere. Yes, in the voting booth, too. If we don’t do everything as Catholic Christians, then our faith is so much wind, as in, hot air.

How is this for a movie title, The President Has Two Faces

If Hollywood made a movie about President Obama, they could call it “The President Has Two Faces”. Or for a better parallel in wording, “The Fuehrer Has Two Faces”. I just read an article by Thomas Sowell about the two Obamas: the man of illusion who promised “hope and change” and the reality of the man who has me hoping for some real change this November. Here’s looking at your two faces, Mr. President. May many millions of people wake up and see you for who and what you truly are. Before it is too late.

Read “Obama versus Obama” by Thomas Sowell. And get ready to vote in November. This is the most important election we’ve faced in a long time. In my lifetime, for sure.

Woohoo, I finished NaNoWriMo, and yes, I watched the RNC (part of it)

Camp NaNoWriMo August Session 2012 WINNERI’m amazed, quite frankly, that I managed to do it. Finish Camp NaNoWriMo, August session. I’m not happy with it, not by a long shot. In the end I ended up typing whatever I could think of — well, really, it’s been that way all week long. Just typing anything to get something typed. I don’t feel like I have written, I feel like I have typed. All my plans and hopes for this NaNoWriMo got zapped into nowhere after my dad wrecked his car during week three and everything turned upside down. Bless his heart. Things are upside down for him much worse than they are for me. I can only imagine what he is going through, losing a substantial portion of his independence and mobility — not only is he now without a car, but he sustained physical injuries that give him pain and keep him from being able to do what he’d like. Nothing major… if you’re a teenager. It’s a little different when you’re in your 80’s.

And speaking of 80’s, yes, I saw Clint Eastwood during the RNC. And yes, I actually enjoyed his performance. I have always been a huge fan of improv, whether of the musical or the acting kind. And I thoroughly enjoyed the empty chair bit. Did I notice that he struggled a little when he spoke? Yes. Did it bother me? No. Does the barrage of criticism hurled at him bother me? Yes.

Because so many of the people criticizing him are not criticizing what he said but the fact that he looked and seemed so old saying it. Or he seemed frail. Or he seemed to struggle with his words. Ooh, how dare he?

I say, so what? When I’m 82 like Clint Eastwood, I hope I even know what year it is, what the Convention is about and why it matters, who’s running for what office, and where I even AM. I think he did great, the bit he did was funny, he said what no one else could or would say, and as far as I’m concerned, more power to him! He — wait for it — made my day! He made a lot of other folks’ day, too. That crowd was having a good time. What’s wrong with that? Nuthin’.

Seems to me a lot of folks — especially Democrats and “Liberals”, you know, the “oh-so-tolerant” crowd — need to kick back and loosen up and learn how to take a joke. And we the people need to kick a certain joke of a loser out of Washington and get on with making America great again. Before it’s too late.

As for the criticism that it took attention off Romney, I say, it wasn’t the Romney Convention, it was the Republican Convention. It’s bigger than Romney, and it’s bigger than Romney plus Ryan. It’s even bigger than the Republican Party. All of us — Republicans, Independents, men and women of good will, even Democrats with a lick of sense, if there are any of those left remaining on the planet — need to work together to get the most pro-abortion pro-culture-of-death president we’ve ever had out of office in November. His socialism and Saul Alinsky goals and methods are transforming America, alright. Into a place I don’t recognize and I sure don’t like.

If a famous and legendary Hollywood figure wants to be part of that with us instead of donating millions and millions of dollars to causes and people diametrically opposed to everything this country has traditionally represented, then I welcome him. I’d rather hear him than the so-called “eloquent” Obama any day. Surely people are being sarcastic when they say that. Eloquent? Are you kidding me?! Did someone change the definition of “eloquent” when I wasn’t looking?

Chick-fil-A Appreciation Alive and Well Here

Stand up to bullies...and eat mor chikinChick-fil-A Appreciation Day is going well at the store the next town over. I live in a small town that doesn’t have its own Chick-fil-A; so, even though I threw my back out Saturday over a week ago and even though I hadn’t been out of the house since then until yesterday afternoon, I did manage to hobble out to the car and drive over here to show my support — both moral support and financial — for a company that is not afraid to speak out and stand up for Christian values amidst a firestorm of very vocal opposition. The fact that they aren’t afraid attracts me immensely. Like I always say, the only way to handle a bully is to stand up to him.

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear: but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. (2 Tim 1:7)”

And for more on what the verse means by sound mind (sobriety in some versions):

“and of a sound mind: in the principles and doctrines of the Gospel; and which shows itself in a prudent conduct and behaviour; in sobriety, moderation, temperance, purity, and honesty; all which may be signified by the word here used: and these who have such dispositions and qualities from God, will not easily give way to the enemies of religion, or decline their duty for fear of them (Gill’s Exposition of the Entire Bible, quoted on the page containing the quoted Bible verse).”

I hope you’ll show your support today, too. God bless you.

One decision down, get ready, the real battle is only just beginning

Where's the freedom? Protesting the HHS Mandate outside the Supreme Court

Yes, I heard the news. No, I’m not surprised. Neither am I throwing up my hands in despair. The battle over religious freedom (and freedom in general) is on and it has only just begun. I’d like to quote a newsletter I received today from Eric Scheidler. I think it will help to clear up some of the misinformation which is already flooding the airwaves now that this decision has been handed down. We have a long way to go, folks. Get educated. Do it now.

THE SUPREME COURT DID NOT UPHOLD THE HHS MANDATE TODAY.

Our opponents will try to claim we’ve lost our fight against the HHS Mandate because of today’s ruling. That is simply FALSE.

The Supreme court did not address the HHS Mandate issue in their ruling today. Nor did they declare the whole 2700-page Obamacare law to be constitutional.

Today’s ruling only addresses the constitutionality of a few pages of that law, on completely different issues from the HHS Mandate.

Provisions of Obamacare like the HHS Mandate could still be struck down in the future. In fact, I’m sure it will be when the scores of lawsuits against the HHS Mandate reach the high court.

But I’m not willing to wait that long — not when religious freedom is on the line. …

As I said, I’ll be nailing down specific plans for future action against the HHS Mandate soon. Meanwhile, visit the Stand Up website to see what you can do RIGHT NOW to fight the HHS Mandate:

http://StandUpRally.com/action/

So don’t lose heart.

Yes, today’s Supreme Court ruling is a disappointment. But in the end it will only INCREASE the urgency of our protests and inspire MORE people to join us out onto the streets!

The fight to stop the HHS Mandate will go forward with zeal — in the courts, in Congress, on the streets and on election day!

Yours for Life,

— Eric

Fortnight for Freedom and a novel in progress

Fortnight 4 Freedom

I plan to write more about this at some point but right now I’m linking to the USCCB‘s Fortnight 4 Freedom site. My current novel-in-progress focuses on this very issue of freedom and faith, and the writing has taken over my blog time and pretty much the rest of my life. (After much struggle and a long dry period, having the writing take over my life, at least part of it, is a good thing and I am loving it.)

“The fourteen days from June 21—the vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More—to July 4, Independence Day, are dedicated to this “fortnight for freedom”—a great hymn of prayer for our country. Our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power—St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome.  Culminating on Independence Day, this special period of prayerstudycatechesis, and public action will emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty. Dioceses and parishes around the country have scheduled special events that support a great national campaign of teaching and witness for religious liberty.”

Vote the Values That Will Stand the Test of Fire

A friend sent this video to me. Thought I’d share it with you. It’s called Test of Fire, made by Catholics Called 2 Witness (cc2w.org). Watching this makes me want to go out and vote right now!

Will you vote the values that will stand the test of fire? Some things are more important than high gas prices or a faltering economy. They are life, marriage and freedom. This November, Catholics must stand up and protect their sacred rights and duties.  Please share this video with your friends! Visit www.cc2w.org for more details.

A lot of abortions today in Birmingham, Alabama

October Baby, Every Life Is BeautifulWent to see October Baby last night, loved it! I’ll tell you more about that later. Part 2 of the rally post will be up later also (see rally post Part 1). Right now I’m too pooped to do much more than this. I’m emotionally drained. Why? Because after Mass this morning (yes, I’m keeping my commitment to attend Daily Mass; pray for me!) a friend stopped as I knelt making my thanksgiving after Holy Communion. She was on her way out the door and wanted to tell me that abortions were in full swing over at Planned Parenthood, so we headed over there.

They’re usually closed on Saturdays but they were closed a lot this past week; they sure made up for lost time today. Their parking lot was packed. So sad. But a church had adopted the day as part of 40 Days for Life, so we had the sidewalk covered with prayer volunteers while there were women inside making the worst decisions of their lives. And ending the possibility for some lives to ever reach the point of making any decisions at all. Ever.

40 Days for Life, Pray to End Abortion

There were women outside the abortion mill, waiting for sisters or daughters or friends who were inside. Many years ago I was one of those women sitting in a car while a friend went inside to make the worst choice she ever made. Strange, isn’t it, how people always call it a “choice” but my friend didn’t feel like she had a choice at all. She felt trapped and terrified and horrible.

I haven’t seen her in years now. Don’t know how she manages to look into the eys of the kids she already had, knowing that there was another one who they will never know. Who she will never know. Who will never know what it means to live or breathe or exist outside the womb that held him until the moment the abortionist tore him apart and vacuumed him out of what should have been the safest place in the world for a little baby waiting to be born. Waiting to be held. Waiting and imagining the face that goes with the voice he’s been hearing as he grows. Never imagining the awful fate that awaits him.

God, have mercy on us. Forgive us the horrible evil that people do in our world. Your world. You have made us for Yourself, You have given us Life and offered us Love and Truth and Goodness and Beauty. And we have chosen to rip each other apart. We have chosen evil and sin and death instead. God, forgive us! Have mercy on us all. Amen.

Every life is beautiful, Go see October Baby, in theaters now

ACLJ Says Reports of Execution of Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani Are Rumors

Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani has courageously stood his ground and refused to recant his faith in ChristAs of March 5 the ACLJ is reported to have denied the rumors that Pastor Youcef had been hanged. Now that was a few days ago. Does anybody have a reliable update? And I’m keeping him in my prayers and especially remembering him in my Daily Offering and at Daily Mass. Please keep this courageous and faithful pastor in your prayers, too, as well as all others who are persecuted for faith in Christ Jesus. Amen.

The American Center for Law and Justice’s sources in Iran confirmed Saturday that Iranian pastor Youcef Nadarkhani is in fact alive, and rumors that he was to be executed over the weekend were false.

Photos surfaced on the Internet Saturday, allegedly showing a blindfolded Nadarkhani facing execution by hanging. These photos are outdated and false, the ACLJ reported Saturday.

Although Nadarkhani is still alive, the ACLJ does still believe that Iranian courts have issued an execution order. In the past, Iran has not informed the public of an execution, oftentimes dropping the prisoner’s executed body on the family’s doorstep.

Something different for Lent: Don’t just say you’re prolife, prove it

40 Days for Life, Praying, Fasting, Keeping Vigil, to End Abortion in our World

My favorite time of year is not spring or summer or fall or winter. It’s Lent. I enjoy Advent and Christmas. And Easter, of course. But Lent is the season I look forward to all year. Especially since I started participating in the 40 Days for Life campaign to end abortion. There are two campaigns per year, one in the fall and one in spring. The current campaign coincides with Lent, as it did last year. This is a time of penance, fasting, prayer and alms-giving (don’t forget the alms-giving!), and spending time in peaceful prayer vigil out on the sidewalk during these forty days is a wonderful way to enter more fully into the spirit of the Lenten season.
