Living in a Time of Quarantine

Seems like everybody is writing and talking about Coronavirus now. I’m working on another post about specifically Catholic ways to spend time during the shutdowns so many are experiencing. But this one is for anyone, Catholic, some other religion, or no religion at all.

Stuck at home? Already climbing the walls? Missing the ambient sound of people all around? Of course, if you’re stuck at home with other people, lack of noise may not be a problem. ;)

I used to do almost all my writing in coffee shops. In a way I miss that now: the coffee always hot and fresh and I didn’t have to make it, I only had to get up and fill my cup. And the available flavors were a plus as were the various snacks. Yum! And there were people, so many people, and so much laughter and chatter, the sound of coffee cups clinking, and for some reason all that noise made it easy for me to get lost in my thoughts.

I rarely get the opportunity to visit coffee shops anymore, and not at all now with the Coronavirus situation. But I can pretend if I wanna with the help of Coffitivity. Use the web app or download it to run in the background. (See web page for available versions.)

“According to a peer-reviewed study out of the University of Chicago, “A moderate level of ambient noise is conducive to creative cognition.” In a nutshell, this means being a tiny bit distracted helps you be more creative. This is why those AHA moments happen when we’re brushing our teeth, taking a shower, or mowing the lawn! If we’re not focused too much at a task at hand, we come up with awesome stuff. In the coffee shop, the chatter and clatter actually distracts us a tiny bit and allows our creative juices to start flowing. It sounds crazy, but it works!”

Better than leaving the television on, uses less energy, and presents less of a temptation to channel surf. :)

Another way to soothe your nerves (and mind & soul) is with some music. If you haven’t already now is the time to subscribe to Amazon Prime Music available to all Prime members. I’ve got it streaming on my Roku, on my phone and tablet, and on my Echo Dots and Echo Plus, while the Coffitivity app plays, too. Perfect!

Thank you for visiting and reading. I hope you’re staying safe and well and home if you can and I hope something in this post helps you endure in this time of uncertainty. More is on the way. I’m praying for all of us, please pray for me, too (and Miss Lucy Dawg). Until next time, whoever and wherever you are, may the Lord bless you and keep you, and may His peace be always with you. Amen. +JMJ+
