Why Progressives crave wide open spaces, er, borders

Progressives on both sides of the aisle (which aisle seems more and more superfluous, even downright meaningless) have refused to secure our borders and, indeed, have pushed to leave our borders open to let the stream of illegal immigrants into the U.S. become a flood of—dare I say it?—Biblical proportions. Why, you ask? It’s an old Progressive Era trick. You see, Progressives realized long ago that the best way to grab (and keep) the massive amount of power they crave is to take advantage of a crisis (or a series of crises) to create an unstable situation.

And if Progressives can’t find a crisis, they do the next best thing: they invent one. And they keep on inventing them and stoking the flames of instability and the resulting fear by any means possible. To them, the ends do justify the means. And by creating instability (or doing whatever they can to increase instability) they can also create a state of fear in the masses over whom they long to wield power, always more power. This also creates a state of dependence as the masses look to their rulers to help and protect them from danger. The real danger is that the masses don’t realize that the rulers can be a bigger danger to them than whatever other crisis they face.

“During wartime this country has historically done whatever it takes to see things through. But in peacetime the American character is not inclined to look to the state for meaning and direction. Liberals have responded to this by constantly searching for new crises, new moral equivalents of war.” —Liberal Fascism, by Jonah Goldberg.

So just how do the wide open spaces of our unsecured borders help Progressives? In two ways that I can think of, right off the top of my head. First, the flood of immigrants illegally crossing the border creates the instability Progressives need, which has been useful (and carefully nurtured) for many years. In fact, the situation on our southern border is fast reaching a boiling point. Second, as people are frightened more and more, they turn more and more to the federal government to defend them, allowing the government to amass more and more power to itself, claiming all the while that this power grab is absolutely necessary if they are to save the people.

Goldberg quotes in his book, Liberal Fascism, one J. T. Flynn, a New Republic journalist who left the “journal” (guess he had an attack of intelligence, morality, conscience, integrity, etc.) and became an outspoken critic of Roosevelt and the New Deal in the 1930’s.

“He [Flynn]…was convinced that the New Deal was a fascist enterprise. He predicted that proponents of the New Deal and its successors would become addicted to crises to maintain power and implement their agendas…[Flynn wrote: ‘The New Deal] is born in crisis, lives on crises, and cannot survive the era of crisis. By the very law of its nature it must create for itself, it if is to continue, fresh crises from year to year. Mussolini came to power in the postwar crisis and became himself a crisis in Italian life…Hitler’s story is the same. And our future is charted out upon the same turbulent road of a permanent crisis.'”

Liberal FascismLest you imagine that either I or Goldberg are talking about Democrats alone, allow me to remind you of what I wrote at the beginning of this post: that the two sides of the aisle have become superfluous and meaningless. Talk of bipartisanship notwithstanding, Democrats and Republicans have more in common these days than they have differences. Progressive thinking (isn’t that an oxymoron?) and ideology has spread like a cancer throughout both parties, as it has almost every aspect of our culture.

As I continue to read this book (and also A Patriot’s History of the United States and Woodrow Wilson and the Roots of Modern Liberalism) I’ll be writing about the militarization of American society (think, The War on Terror, the War on Poverty, The War on Drugs or any number of Wars which sound noble until you take a closer look); the revisionist history to which we have been subjected (a tactic that was part of Karl Marx’s program for the total “transformation of society”), and much more. If any of this sounds familiar to you, especially in the past year or so, well, then, you’re right! We’ve been hearing a lot about this kind of nonsense from our government. Nonsense it may seem or even be, but it has far-reaching consequences.

And don’t let your liberal friends or relatives try to tell you that the fascists are the right-wingers. Historically it’s just not true. Fascism was and is a movement and a program from the left. Republican or Democrat, if they’re Progressives, the fascisti have been on the left.

Peace be with you and I hope you have a great Fourth of July weekend. Enjoy that holiday while you have it. And you won’t unless we find a way to stand up against the tyranny that is being shoved down our throats. God bless America and may He help us keep our land free from sea to shining sea!
